I jotted this down in my notebook yesterday as a final poem for National Poetry Writing Month, but didn’t get a chance to post it till now. Hope everyone you engaged in NaPoWriMo 2018 had a good time writing and/or reading some spontaneous, completely unedited poetry. 🙂
Inspired by Smashing Pumpkins “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning”
What really is an end if not a beginning, or
else what can truly begin if something
has not yet ended?
Even after relationships end the
pain or love of memories not
yet over linger in the mind.
When a child is born it leaves
the warmth of its mother’s body
in order to be swaddled in
the embrace of a parent’s arms.
When a hatchling discards the egg
that once encased it, does that egg
not continue on? Crumbling within
the Earth, feeding the roots of
the tree whose branches the hatchling
soon will one day fly away from.
Every beginning is an end,
but every end is also a beginning.
We are always in flux, flowing
quickly or easing along slowly
from one transition to another.
We can fight against the current,
exhausting ourselves trying
to delay the inevitability of moving
downstream, or we can rest for
a moment to enjoy the scenery
along the banks and move forward
with renewed vitality to discover
just where the water will take us.
